GARAGE SALE ITEMS
A garage sale (also known as an attic sale, garbage sale, junk sale, lawn sale, moving sale, patio sale, rummage sale, tag sale, thrift sale, or yard sale or basement sale) is an informal, event for the sale of used goods by private individuals.
Staples of garage sales include old clothing, books, toys, household knickknacks, lawn and garden tools, sports equipment, and board games. Larger items like furniture and occasionally home appliances are also sold. Garage sales occur most frequently in suburban areas on good-weather weekends, and usually have designated hours for the sale. Buyers who arrive before the hours of the sale to review the items are known as "early birds" and are often professional restorers or resellers. Such sales also attract people who are searching for bargains or for rare and unusual items. Bargaining, also known as haggling, on prices is routine, and items may or may not have price labels affixed. Some people buy goods from these sales to restore them for resale.
In some areas like San Clemente, garage sales have taken on a special meaning to a community and have become events of special local significance involving dozens or hundreds of families at the same time.
A Garage Sale is a fantastic way TO GO GREEN within a community and sell or give things to others they could use instead of those items ending up in the land fill they are RECYCLED to a new owner and the world becomes a better place.
ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES
An antique is an old collectable item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society. The common definition of antique is a collectible object such as a piece of furniture or work of art that has a high value because of its considerable age, yet it does in fact vary depending on the source, product, and year. Motor vehicles are an exception to the 100-year rule. The customary definition of antique requires that an item be at least 100 years old and in original, unaltered condition. Therefore, cars are generally considered antique if 25 years old or more.
Collectables are items of limited supply that are sought for a variety of reasons including a possible increase in value. In a financial sense, collectables can be viewed as a hedge against inflation. Over time, their value can also increase as they become more rare due to loss, damage or destruction. Manufacturers and retailers have used collectables in a number of ways to increase sales. Collectables have played an important role in tourism, in the form of souvenirs.
Another important field of collecting that is also big business is memorabilia, which includes collectables related to a person, organization, event or media, including T-shirts, posters, and numerous other collectables marketed to fans.
ESTATE SALE ITEMS
AND ESTATE AUCTIONS
An estate sale or estate liquidation is a sale or auction to dispose of a substantial portion of the materials owned by a person who is recently deceased or who must dispose of his or her personal property to facilitate a move.
The most common reason for an estate sale is the death of the property owner, and the consequent need to quickly liquidate the deceased's belongings for any number of reasons:
- The survivors/heirs may have no interest in the bulk of the personal belongings left by the deceased
- The survivors/heirs may simply lack space to keep the belongings
- The survivors/heirs cannot agree to the disposition of tangible property, and thus a court has order the goods to be sold in an estate sale with the proceeds to be divided among the survivors (after payment of the estate's debts)
- The will of the deceased may have mandated a sale of assets
An estate sale may also occur because the property owner will be moving or has moved into a new residence where he will be unable to keep his property, such as an assisted living facility, a retirement community, a rest home, or the home of a family member.
An estate sale may also take place because of divorce, foreclosure, or relocation.
